AMS1 Amsterdam

Serverfarm is a finalist for Managed Services / Colocation Project of the Year at the DCS Awards

The transformation of Serverfarm’s AMS1 data center in the heart of Amsterdam is a story of how a building changed, but also the philosophy of the people who work to help create a better economy and environment.

The AMS1 facility is less than 3km from of the City’s famous Station Centraal. As of February 2025, it boasts an additional 3.6MW of capacity available for hyperscale core and proximity AI workloads.

This was achieved without any new construction (no additional steel or concrete) and without adding any additional strain to the local power grid.

This exemplary project was delivered using Serverfarm’s adaptive reuse methodology, developed over 2 decades, and proven to provide maximum densification to deliver more power and more compute within an existing environment.

Through its sustainable infrastructure approach to expansion and modernization, AMS1 is leading the way for environmentally responsible AI platforms, Cloud, and SaaS deployments aligned with the Netherlands’ ambitious goals for green energy and carbon neutrality.

There are lots of technical reasons to celebrate this project and we could list dozens such as these Serverfarm AMS1 Data Center Upgrade – Points of Difference
• M+E design is future proofed for emerging AI.
• Liquid direct cooling/immersion cooling ready.
• Densification benefits for deployment at scale – greater cooling performance results in greater IT capacity.
• Suitable for large scale deployments (2MW).
• Capex benefit at start of engagement.
• Secure, stable + sustainable utility feeds. AMS1’s secured power means available megawatts can be quickly dedicated to customer IT workloads without additional strain on the power grid.
• The benefit of an NVIDIA DGX certified data center in the heart of Amsterdam.

All that matters. It is the important story of both a building and the methodology behind the Serverfarm business, including the AMS1 team of dedicated engineering experts.

The people in the AMS1 data center exemplify how sustainable development is core to Serverfarm. The AMS1 upgrade project used methods within the Amsterdam Government’s policy guard rails in response to sustainability, power security and environmental concerns of citizens.

The team on the ground are Amsterdam locals and who work tirelessly to provide the infrastructure for the city’s AI and digital ecosystem grow and create better living standards for all while taking care of the environment.
