Amsterdam’s Economy Embracing AI, Climate Tech and Clean Energy – with Serverfarm ideally located to help

Learn more about our sustainability approach

Amsterdam has witnessed a raft of announcements and investments this year that are propelling the city to the forefront of AI, clean technology development and green energy initiatives.

Amsterdam’s investment environment for AI developments was recently showcased during October’s AI Summit which saw discussions about how optimized IT infrastructure is vital to delivering sustainable AI.

Amsterdam’s applied AI economy is advancing quickly beyond the training of LLMs to AI production workloads being used to solve real world problems. This has caused data center proximity, latency, connectivity, and secure access to clean power to gain major importance.

In terms of clean energy and climate tech developments, August 2024 saw the Dutch Government commit €148m to fund companies developing clean energy tech in batteries, PVs and hydrogen energy sources. Earlier this year, the Amsterdam based private fund Carbon Equity raised €100m for investing in clean energy tech firms. This follows the Dutch government’s commitment to energy transition, which includes a €500m investment to stimulate a €1.25bn hydrogen cluster. The country has 4GW of electrolyzer capacity, 21GW offshore wind, and plans 136,000km of hydrogen-retrofitted natural gas pipeline by 2030.

Groups such as AI4Fintech, a community started at the University of Amsterdam, are connecting AI and financial experts with investors. In June 2024, British-Dutch applied AI  company CuspAI raised €28m ($30 million) in startup capital to develop materials for more efficient CO2 capture using AI.
