Addressing ESG, decarbonization, ESG, and sustainability challenges to providing net zero data centers and IT. A paper for CTOs, CIOs and Data Center professionals.

COP28 began on the 30th of November and runs through the 12th of December 2023 in Dubai.

The Data Center and IT sectors are already experiencing a rapidly changing policy environment.

A raft of legislation and disclosure requirements are on the horizon from the EU Energy Efficiency Directive (EED) and Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) which will directly impact data center / IT operations and reporting.

Other legislation on governance, strategy, risk management, reports and metrics is coming. Companies will be required to disclose in granular detail the impacts of their efforts to cut carbon from their digital operations.

This is happening as broad and far reaching green policies such as European Union’s Green Deal and the United States’ Inflationary Reduction Act (IRA) are changing and challenging IT and data center operations. Both policies play a pivotal role in addressing economic challenges and ensuring sustainability.

The rapidly changing policy environment on climate reporting is just the start.

Accounting for and reporting on impact and carbon cost of IT operations from the building to the application is the new normal.

We believe collaboration across CTO, CIO and Engineering teams is the only way to meet growing environmental challenges.

The Serverfarm Paper: DC + IT Collaboration to Cut Carbon is a conversation starter to bring together the different stakeholders in the DC and IT stack.

As COP28 continues in Dubai, the paper is provided to bring more IT and DC professionals into the discussion.

We wish COP28 every success. As responsible technology business leaders, we know the interest and attention of the world is also on us. We must demonstrate that we are ready and eager to come together to work for a sustainable, equitable, and resilient future.
